Bottini, the underground town of Siena
Who doesn’t know Siena ? The tourist that came in our region stop in Siena which is famous for the beauty of its historic center, the magnificent Duomo, the famous Piazza del Campo and the Horse race il Palio that take place in July and August of every year but not so many people know about the Bottini.
I love Siena that I know very well. Few years ago I had the chance to visit the Bottini,
The Bottini is a series of tunnels, more or less 14 miles built under the street in the past and used as a way to bring the water at the houses. It is a smart engineering water system who takes the water from the countryside and brings inside the town under level street.
The name Bottini is due to the ceiling of the tunnels. Today is no more use to bring water at the buildings and it has been restored and opened at the public for visit
I suggest visiting, it is unique and brings to the past, you have a full immersion in the history and it is very suggestive
One of the entrances is in Fonte Gaia, the mountain in the main square Piazza del Campo
The visit s guided and under reservation, the ticket cost only 10€ and it worth it.
