From Patches to the Decadentism – Private paintings in the lands of Poliziano

23/March/2015

More than 100 paintings and drawings from the troves of collectors connected to the lands of Poliziano. The exhibition takes place in Montepulciano among the unforgettable views of the real Tuscany, starting from paintings of the most important macchiaioli – such as Abbati, Borrani, Signorini, Lega, Fattori – right up to twentieth-century works, touching upon various kinds of painting: landscapes, the portraits, agricultural scenes, cityscapes, contemporary life.

The core painters who, in Florence of the eighteen-sixties, worked through the application of “patches” or “stains”, were followed by the protagonists of Tuscan Naturalism and then by artists more involved in the wave of renewal of pictorial languages of the new century.

The exhibition, presenting such masterpieces as L’Arno a Varlungo by Odoardo Borrani, is enriched by a large section of drawings, some of which are merely preparatory to famous and important paintings as in the case of the charcoal Butteri in Maremma by Giovanni Fattori and Mercato vecchio by Telemaco Signorini, or Sole a Seravezza by Fidelfio Simi, which are exhibited in the various stages of processing from the first “touch of the pen” to drawings on the canvas. Edited by Silvestra Bietoletti and Roberto Longi, experts in the field of the visual arts, the exhibition is designed by the architect Fabio Fiorini.

The project is developed by Fondazione Cantiere Internazionale d’Arte in collaboration with Rotary Club Chianciano-Chiusi-Montepulciano, with the support of the Province of Siena, the patronage of Tuscany Region, the participation of Pro Loco Montepulciano and Consorzio del Vino Nobile di Montepulciano.
