The Abbazia di Monte Oliveto Maggiore, marvel between the Crete Senesi
We live in one of the most beautiful areas in the world, surrounded by a lovely countryside everywhere and perfectly preserved by the man’s hand. We love to suggest our guestes what to see and not to miss in this beautiful region and one of the most important attraction that shouldn’t be miss is the Abey of Monte Oliveto maggiore.
The Abey is located at only 30 minutes drive from Villa Poggiano in one of the most beautiful park of the area. The Abey was builted in 1319 and is actually a permanent residence of benedictine monks.
Is a very important Abbey becouse of the marvelous frescoes contained in the big cloister. They represent scenes of the life of S. Benedict, painted some by Luca Signorelli who also painted the all wall at the entrance in 1497 others by Giovanni Antonio Bazzi named “Il Sodoma” who also painted the other three walls from 1505 to 1508 when the Signorelli was required to paint the Duomo di Orvieto.
The Abbey di Monte Oliveto is also famous for the wooden chorus and the library both built by Fra Giovanni da Verona who has been working inside the Abbey same period of Sodoma, affecting each other their style and way of painting, that’s the reason why the column line inside the library looks like the column line painted on the frescoes.
The Abbey was very famous in the past due to the spices they produced in until 1865. The big collection of pots and vases for chemist is located on the superior room of the library and it contains tiles of the ‘600 and ‘700 made by the kiln of San Quirico d’Orcia.
Visitors coming at the Abbazia di Monte Oliveto are most of all attracted by the gregorian chants. The Abbey is open to visits also during the Mass and other ceremonies. The monks also produce wine, honey, olive oil and a cure herb liquor available at their small shop.
You can not miss to visit this lovely place.
